Tarantulas

Tarantulas comprise a group of large and often hairy spiders of the family Theraphosidae. The term “tarantula” is usually used to describe members of the family Theraphosidae, although many other members of the same infraorder (Mygalomorphae) are commonly referred to as “tarantulas” or “false tarantulas”. Tarantulas are normally separated into New World species, which are known to have urticating hairs that can cause irritation to the skin, and in extreme cases, damage to the eyes, while Old World Species, originate from the Eastern Hemisphere (Asia, Africa, Australia, Europe), are distinguished from their speed, venom, and lack of urticating hairs. They tend to be more defensive, faster, and possess potentially more potent venom compared to New World species, which rely on urticating hairs for defense.

Old World tarantula (Poecilotheria metallica)

Poecilotheria metallica, also known as the peacock tarantula, is an Old World species of tarantula. It is the only blue species of the genus Poecilotheria. Like others in its genus it exhibits an intricate fractal-like pattern on the abdomen. The species’ natural habitat is deciduous forest in Andhra Pradesh, in central southern India. It has been classified as Critically Endangered by the IUCN.

Old World tarantula (Pterinochilus murinus – DCF)

Pterinochilus murinus or the orange baboon tarantula, is a nocturnal spider in the family Theraphosidae that was first described in 1897 by Reginald Innes Pocock. This species is found in Angola, as well as central and southern Africa. This species is incredibly defensive and, as with most old world tarantulas, should not be held. The bite of this species, while not serious, is extremely painful. Moreover, the species is more than willing to inflict such a bite without first presenting the typical threat display.

New World tarantula (Brachypelma smithi)

Brachypelma smithi is a species of spider in the family Theraphosidae (tarantulas) native to Mexico. Mexican redknee tarantulas are a popular choice as pets among tarantula keepers. With its striking black and orange coloration and calm demeanor, it’s a go-to species for many enthusiasts. Its relatively forgiving care requirements make it a perfect choice for beginners, while its impressive lifespan ensures that it can be a long-term addition to your collection.

New World tarantual (Grammostola rosea)

The Rose Hair Tarantula is celebrated for its calm and resilient temperament. Often affectionately called “Rosie,” it is a forgiving species ideal for beginners. While some individuals may occasionally display defensive behaviors, such as flicking urticating hairs when startled, most are docile and appreciate minimal disturbance. Their long lifespan and ability to withstand extended periods without food further contribute to their popularity.
